Jaante Ho is a collection of IEC (Information Education Communication) Material for Cardiovascular Diseases, currently available in Hindi and English.

Objective

To create a communication design intervention to address the issue of Health Literacy pertaining to Cardiovascular Health in India.

What?

The term ‘health literacy’ refers to the cognitive and social skills that affect people’s willingness and capacity to access, comprehend, and apply knowledge to maintain good health.

Cardiovascular diseases are a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels.

Why?

Heart Diseases have become the leading cause of mortality in India. Globally, 86% of Cardiovascular deaths could have been prevented or delayed.

Health literacy in India is at its infancy. It has been noticed in public health practice that people failed to make informed decisions pertaining to their disease or health. Low health literacy has been associated with higher costs and worse outcomes.

Research

I conducted primary and secondary research to understand both health literacy and cardiovascular health.

I understood health literacy through its models, psychology, and examples of interventions. I looked at the common heart conditions, epidemiology of heart diseases, causes and risk factors, prevention methods, diagnosis and treatment. Additionally, I saw the beliefs and habits of patients and at-risk persons.

So many people in India, even the well-educated, have very low health literacy.

Solutioning

The four stages of message communication were mapped to the three stages of diseases. The problem at each of these 12 sub-stages was understood and mapped to Nutbeam's model of health literacy, which defined the design brief for each sub-stage.

This was further mapped to user journeys of three personas to identify the possible touchpoints.

Based on multiple factors such as appeal, trustworthiness, possibility of misinterpretation - the mediums of communication were identified.

For this project, six of the highest priority materials were produced.

Final Deliverables

This was the most fulfilling project I've done, and will always be one of my favourites.
It might seem trivial, but trust me, health literacy WILL make a difference.
I'm always up for interesting (and boring) conversations about design, culture, and life!
